I love Balsamiq mockups! Use it almost weekly!
However, software UI tools don't seem to solve the 'first ideas' or 'napkin drawings'. For some reason, I can't bring in software until the idea is a little more clear, since all UI software (incl. Balsamiq) only allow pre-set controls.

To solve the early stages, I use:

Very fun magnetic UI widgets for prototyping on a whiteboard. You should try them!

Thought you might be interested in the latest version of our GUI design tool: GUI Design Studio (http://www.carettasoftware.com/press/release-2009-05.html). We've added lots of new features which professional application and web designers are finding really useful, particularly in an agile development environment. You can try it out on a 30 day free trial from the download page: http://www.carettasoftware.com/downloads.html

If you would like to do a review, just let us know, we would be happy to help.

Hi Greg, Peldi here from Balsamiq. First of all, thank you SO MUCH for the review. Like you said Mockups is in "constant improvement mode" and feedback like yours is just what I need to make it better. Let me address some of your concerns:

* After ‘Quick Add’ clicking f2 doesn’t go into edit mode - this is intentional, so that you can "rapid-fire" add controls as you think of them, like I do in my video demo here: http://www.balsamiq.com/products/mockups - to edit the control you just added you can hit ESC and then F2...edit, hit ENTER or CTRL+ENTER and hit / or + to go back to Quick Add, all without using the mouse. ;)

* Dragging items from the strip doesn’t show the guides - yup, that's already on the to-do list. Unfortunately because of the way the code is written this is not an easy feature to add, but we'll figure it out.

* It would be nice if there were a better way to select a set of items without moving the item beneath it. - SHIFT+click and CTRL+click don't work for you? I do like the idea of a modifier so that clicking and dragging won't make the control that's under the mouse steal the focus, let me look into that, this is a great idea.

* highlight locked items on right-click menu hover...wow, cool idea. Not sure how easy it is to implement, but I'll add it to my TODO.

* smaller fonts in tree - great catch and easy to do, I'll add that soon.

* Ability to click through from one mockup to another to create workflow - you can do that now in 1.6! http://www.balsamiq.com/blog/?cat=14 - (no HTML generation at the moment)

* Ability to regroup after ungrouping items - what I want to do here is let you double-click on a group to "enter it" and edit its contents.

* Radio and Check Box controls should allow adding multiple at once similar to Dropdown - this is a BRILLIANT idea, we'll add it right away.

* It would be nice to have right-click context menus for some operations like grouping or ungrouping - yup, already on the list.

* Layers - hmm, I'd like to avoid this if at all possible...this is not Photoshop! :) Once we get the selection modifier in I hope you won't feel the need for this any more.

* Ability to add custom widgets - often requested feature, on the TODO. The only tricky part is how to manage those (adding / editing / deleting) in an easy way. Also, once you have a widget you'll probably want to create a propery inspector for it...slippery slope.

* Favorites bar in addition to the current ‘All’, ‘Big’, ‘Buttons’ - fairly easy to do, I'll add that.

Once again, thank you SO much for the feedback and the great ideas, I hope to implement them all and make Mockups that much more useful to you and others!
